River Island gets savvy with Rihanna and Georgia Hardinge

Georgia Hardinge for River IslandIf the tabloids can't wait for Rihanna's collection for River Island to be revealed at London fashion week on Saturday, fashion editors are more excited by another collaboration from the brand. Georgia Hardinge will launch her 14-piece collection for the chain with a film today: it will be instore in April, and nothing will cost more than £100.
Once seen as a poor relation of high street behemoths such as Topshop and H&M, River Island has of late been stepping up its game withcampaigns shot by Ellen von Unwerth, and that collaboration withRihanna – one of the most watched women on the planet. And now it's supporting young talent.
The latest recipient of its Design Forum initiative, Hardinge is a savvy choice. Launching her label in 2009, the 28-year-old Brit has become known for a sculptural, 3D aesthetic that references everything from human anatomy to architecture. Visually striking, it's little wonder that her clothes have gained a celebrity following – with Lady Gaga and Paloma Faith among those who have worn her pieces. "We have had commissions and have lent things," says the designer. "Both Beyoncé and Nicole Scherzinger bought the same pair of leggings – though I'm not sure they know that."
